Ok, so I figured since I've been here for just about a month and a half I can no longer use the old "I just got here" excuse for not starting my blog. But, the good news is I now have plenty of interesting things to share.
Here's a few things I've figured out so far:
-The kiddie music I hear coming from the streets at least twice a day is NOT the ice cream. In fact, it's the garbage truck. The first couple weeks I just thought these people were obsessed with ice cream. I mean I know it's hot and all but really?! The ice cream truck starts doing rounds at 10 am? I was soon informed that the music was actually coming from the yellow garbage trucks that make a few circulations every day (which also explains why it is so hard to find a trash can anywhere).
-Stinky Tofu...Let's just say it definitely lives up to it's name. This was my first "adventurous" encounter with "Taiwanese delicacies." And the taste wasn't all that bad but the smell...hmm there's really no pleasant way to describe that smell. Any time I'm within a short distance of a night market the smell just kinda smacks me in the face and my stomach turns. But at least I can say I tried it.
-Although Julia Roberts riding her bicycle around Bali in "Eat, Pray, Love" looked so poetic and cute (and was certainly an inspiration for me to have a bicycle of my own here) it is far from poetic (and even further from cute) with a hundred scooters and cars trying to make sure I don't forget my place on the food chain of Taiwanese traffic. And as far as the cute part, being that I live in what is known in Taiwan as the "windy city" either it is so windy that I'm literally pedaling as hard as possible and moving inches at a time or it's so hot and humid that by time I get to school I look like I rode my bike through a typhoon.
-And finally, I am proud to say that I am well on my way to earning a black belt in Chopsticks! While my skills aren't quite up to par with the natives' yet I can now say that I cooked spaghetti with chopsticks...I think that might even qualify me to be .05% Asian, right?
Well, I'm off to enjoy the rest of my Saturday. Hope everyone is doing well and that you all have a fabulous weekend! Cheers!
